WEEK 2 - NEW SCHEDULE, NEW CLASSES

I’m at the end of my second week of the semester now and I’ve definitely been noticing a change in structure & organisation to my classes to that at UWE. Firstly, you get given a syllabus for each class and it lists every assignment and all the readings you’ll need to do, as well as when they’ll be set and a description of them. I’ve been finding this really useful as you can time manage a lot better; you’re able to complete readings in advance if you know you’re going to have a big assignment in the next two weeks. Also, you get set work that’s due in for the following week. This is really different to Graphic Design at UWE; they set projects but they’re only really submitted at the very end of the semester, this is annoying because you can’t gage how you’re doing until your final marks get released. Whereas at VCU you’re able to keep on track of how you’re doing and know where you need to do better in future assignments.
At VCU/American Universities, I definitely think it’s more like a school system. Attendance is very strict and there’s a lot more control in the work you produce and the tighter deadlines. At universities in England it’s definitely less strict on attendance; I think it gives students more responsibility to choose how much time they put into uni, rather than making it compulsory.
Last weekend celebrated Martin Luther King Day. There were pro-gun rallies that happened downtown with an estimated 6000 people visiting Richmond for the event; this was quite scary as a State of Emergency was declared. We were advised by the university to avoid the State Capitol area and to stay inside. This was something I'd never experienced before and was a large concern for everyone living here. It reinstated the seriousness of gun laws in the US that we never have to worry about in the UK.
Also, all the sports facilities at VCU are amazing! There are so many clubs, classes and activities you can do for free. The gym, climbing wall and swimming pools are amazing and there are so many courts for tennis, basketball and other AstroTurf pitches. I’m definitely going to be making the most of the free classes and activities, especially once it gets warmer! VCU provides really cheap outdoor adventure trips like white water kayaking, hiking, canoe day trips and so many others which you don’t really get the opportunity to do in the UK for such good prices.
