WEEK 6 – GIRLS' WEEKEND IN WASHINGTON D.C.

“Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”
Miriam Beard

This weekend Yara, Nikki and I travelled to D.C. using FlixBus. The journey there and back only cost us around $16 each and it took about 2 hours. We arrived on Friday afternoon and checked into High Road Hostel. It was a great place to stay and we couldn’t fault it! We were provided free breakfasts and hot drinks and all the facilities were really modern. On Friday evening we walked down the street our hostel was on to find somewhere for dinner. There were lots of really nice bars and places to eat here, but we decided on having pizza at Mellow Mushroom. Later that evening we went out to a club called Ultra Bar which was really fun.
Green Mall is the area in D.C. where all the museums are, so we spent Saturday here ticking off all the touristy things. We had free entry to the National Museum of African American History. This museum was HUGE; we spent a good few hours there and then went to have lunch at a restaurant called Busboys and Poets. Yara’s friend joined us for the rest of the day as we walked to the White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II memorial. These were all really close together, so it made it easy for us to navigate between. There’s also a bus called the Circulator, which goes around all the tourist attractions and is $1 per ride. For dinner we went to a restaurant called the Right Proper Brewing Company which had amazing food and served a lot of craft beers.

We had researched and planned out each day and cool places to eat before this weekend, which was really useful as we didn’t waste any time deciding on what to do next. Every restaurant we had chosen was really good; we ate a lot of really amazing food whilst in Washington!
Yesterday (Sunday) was more relaxed as we had packed a lot in the day before. We spent the morning doing some shopping and then went to Georgetown, which is known as ‘Little Europe’. Another amazing restaurant we visited here was called High Street Café, and then for dinner we went to Farmer’s Fishers Bakers. This was on the waterfront; we spent the afternoon sat in Georgetown park as the weather was so good and saw an amazing sunset over the Potomac River. Although it was sometimes chilly, overall, we were so lucky with the weather. The sun was out the whole weekend and it was really warm, especially on Sunday.

This weekend in D.C. was so fun, it was really cool being able to visit a different part of America that was so easy to get to. All three of us were really glad we planned out our itinerary before and we were happy we were able to fit so much in. I definitely want to go back at some point this semester.
