WEEK 11 - RETURN TO ENGLAND

“It’s good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end.”
Ernest Hemingway

It’s been one week since I landed in London. On Monday evening it was announced that the country was going into lockdown for three weeks, so, this week has been spent at home.

My journey back to London was really strange. I flew from Richmond, where I saw about 4 people in total throughout the whole airport which was really creepy…and there were only 3 people on my flight. Although, I got upgraded to first class so that was a benefit of having to fly back. I had a layover in Newark, New Jersey, for two hours which was quite a bit busier because there were so many flights being cancelled. The flight from Newark to London is supposed to take 8 hours, but instead it took us 5.5 hours because there was no air traffic which was also a benefit!

This week was also the first week of online classes. Most VCU students have gone home now, so even though I’m in England, I felt quite similar to everyone else in my classes. Most of the syllabus’s have been changed, but it seems that all the professors are trying to make the most out the current situation and trying to keep things fun and interesting. For example, we have to come to each Zoom meeting for my Meaning of Styles class with a different virtual background each week.

The only class of mine which has changed significantly is Drawing from Observation. We aren’t having online classes. Instead, we’re uploading photos of our sketchbooks and weekly assignments onto Google Drive, where we are also able to leave feedback for each other.

Although classes are online, it’s been nice having a structure and work being set this week, especially as everything last week seemed so uncertain! Two weeks ago I was still in New York and I couldn’t have imagined I’d be at home right now.
