ISTD 2021: The Knock-On Effect

The ISTD brief, Putting Things In Order, asked me to think about the way things are sorted and ordered, whether that is hierarchically or geographical for example. I have targeted the way people have been put in order throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. People have been categorised depending on their job, age, vulnerability, geographic location and many more elements, and each of these elements have had significant knock-on effects for society.

The economy has suffered, education has suffered, and citizens and their mental health and well being has suffered. The government has had to make many sacrifices, and these four publications have highlighted these. They include topics that are open to discussion and debate for my target audience (age 16-18), and they aim to educate and show the knock-on effect that every decision has had.

The main concept of ‘the knock-on effect’ is reflected throughout my design choices. The grid aspect is representative of overlapping issues and priorities, as well as the creeping gradient colours. Each publication has a different colour palette, but when put together as a set, they follow a gradient colour scheme, further signifying the idea of a knock-on effect.
